On this page
Sapienza University of Rome is a very affordable choice for non-EU students: if your family's income is abroad, you pay a flat €300, €700 or €1,500 a year depending on your country's band, and Band A includes countries such as India, China and Brazil.
Sapienza also has a large English-taught catalogue and a simple pre-selection system called MoveIn. This guide explains fees, programs, requirements, last year's deadlines and each step to a study visa.
Why Sapienza is good value
- Low flat fees: students who cannot submit an Italian ISEE pay a fixed amount based on their country's GDP at purchasing power parity.
- Wide English catalogue: 11 bachelor's and single-cycle, 48 master's and 23 PhD programs taught in English.
- One pre-selection portal: MoveIn covers most English-taught bachelor's and master's programs.
- Capital city: Rome hosts embassies, international organisations and many employers.
Sapienza tuition fees for non-EU students
Sapienza's fee page (Article 38, section 2 of its regulations) sets a flat fee for students whose income is earned abroad and who therefore cannot get an Italian ISEE. The page does not name the academic year next to the table; its payment dates refer to the 2025/26 cycle. Sapienza's international admissions page confirms tuition of €300–1,500 per year for bachelor's and master's programs.
| Band | Example countries (from Sapienza) | Yearly total | Instalments |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | China, India, Brazil | €300 | €90 + €105 + €105 |
| B | Mexico, Poland, Turkey | €700 | €210 + €245 + €245 |
| C | United States, Germany, Japan | €1,500 | €450 + €525 + €525 |
According to the FindUniPath fact pack, Afghanistan is in Band A (€300). Check the full band list on the Sapienza fee page for your citizenship. If you pay a flat fee you cannot also be assessed on ISEE, receive a fee refund for a DiSCo Lazio scholarship, or get other reductions except those in Articles 56 and 57.

Deadlines: last year's dates (2026/27)
The 2027/28 MoveIn call is not published yet. For the 2026/27 intake, the official dates were:
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| MoveIn pre-selection opened | 22 Dec 2025 |
| MoveIn deadline for non-EU visa applicants | 15 May 2026 |
| Universitaly registration for pre-accepted non-EU students | 30 Jun 2026 |
| PhD 42nd cycle deadline | 17 Jun 2026 (14:00 CET) |
Do not miss 15 May
In 2026, after 15 May non-EU candidates could only apply to Italian-taught programs. Treat mid-May as your real deadline unless the 2027/28 call says otherwise.
Scholarships
Sapienza says scholarships exist at various levels, based on merit and/or family income. The main regional option is DiSCo Lazio, the Lazio right-to-study agency, which runs a yearly call for scholarships and housing. Note that students on the flat fee cannot claim a fee refund for a DiSCo Lazio scholarship. Our scholarships guide covers national schemes too.
Living in Rome
Rome is Italy's capital, and finding housing can take time. The visa requires at least €10,179.85 per year in traceable funds (2026/27 and 2027/28), proof of real accommodation and health cover (national health service registration costs €700 per calendar year, per Universitaly). See cost of studying in Italy.
Benefits
- Flat fees from €300 a year
- Large English-taught catalogue at all levels
- Single MoveIn pre-selection for most programs
- Capital-city location
Difficulties

Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying to an Italian-taught program by mistake after the non-EU English deadline has passed.
- Using your two MoveIn applications on programs where you do not meet the subject credit minimums.

- Booking a dorm application as proof of housing. Embassies want a real booking, rental contract or hospitality declaration.
