Politecnico di Torino (PoliTo) is one of Italy's best-value technical universities for non-EU students: its yearly fee for non-EU citizens is set by your country's economy and cannot be lower than €600 or higher than €3,600, and citizens of countries on Italy's particularly poor list are exempt from tuition by law.

With dozens of engineering and architecture programs taught in English, PoliTo is a strong choice if you want a technical degree without high private-university fees. Here is what you will pay, what you can study, and how to apply.

Why PoliTo is good value

  • Fees linked to your country's GDP: students from lower-income countries pay less, with a ceiling of €3,600 a year.
  • Legal exemption for particularly poor countries: you pay only the non-university fees.
  • Big English-taught engineering offer: from Automotive and Mechanical Engineering to Cybersecurity, Data Science and Energy and Nuclear Engineering.
  • Dedicated support for Afghan students: an MSc scholarship scheme and a reserved PhD place under POLITO for Refugees.

The particularly poor countries list (Annex 1, based on Ministerial Decree 166 of 3 March 2025) includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Senegal, Sudan, Yemen and others. Pakistan, India, Iran and Egypt are not on that list, so citizens of those countries pay the GDP-based fee from Annex 2.

Pay attention to the visa step

PoliTo states that visa applicants pay the first tuition instalment before the university validates their Universitaly pre-enrolment. Budget for this before your visa appointment.

English-taught programs

PoliTo lists 8 bachelor's, 29 master's and 16 PhD programs in English. Examples:

  • Bachelor's (English tracks): Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electronic and Communications Engineering.
  • Master's: Automotive Engineering, Cybersecurity Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, Computer Engineering, Energy and Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering and Management, Architecture for Sustainability, Architecture for Heritage.
  • Mixed tracks: some programs, such as Industrial Production Engineering, are multilingual. Those also need Italian B2, so stick to the English tracks if you do not speak Italian.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's

You need a secondary diploma after at least 12 years of schooling. With 10 or 11 years, you need one or two years of university exams or an approved foundation course. For 2026/27, ranking was based on PoliTo's TIL test or the SAT (not for Architecture). PoliTo announced that from 2027/28 it will use the CISIA TOLC@UNI/CEnT@UNI tests, in person only; that call is not yet published.

Master's

You need a bachelor's degree (EQF 6). There is no fixed minimum grade: an Academic Committee checks your background against the program's curricular requirements. You submit your CV, diploma or provisional certificate, transcript with grading scale, course syllabi, language certificate and a Declaration of Value or CIMEA statement. The GRE is optional but can strengthen your file. You can apply to up to 2 programs per call.

English

English B2 is required for English-taught programs. PoliTo's table accepts, for example, IELTS Academic 5.5, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE 59 or Cambridge B2 First. Exemptions exist for IB and English-medium qualifications from listed countries.

  • PhD: funded positions with a scholarship of about €18,855 gross per year (2026/27), plus 1 reserved position for Afghan nationals with international protection.

Applying from Afghanistan
