- High school diploma meeting the general requirement for your country, plus program-specific averages: around 70% for Arts, University 1, Agriculture and Environment, around 80% for Science, Commerce and Engineering, and 85% for some health programs.
- Engineering generally needs about 80% across English, Pre-Calculus Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, with at least 70% in each.
- English: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 86 (or 4.5 on the new scale), Duolingo 120, PTE 58 or CAEL 60.
- From fall 2026, an Alternative International Admission category for University 1 accepts students missing Grade 12 Math or English if they have an 80% average (at least 70% in each course).

You need a four-year bachelor's with at least a B average (GPA 3.0) over the last 60 credit hours, references, a statement of intent and an English score (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 86, PTE 61). Departments may ask for more, require a confirmed supervisor or place you in a pre-master's year.
Applying from Afghanistan
Afghanistan is not in UM's country list, so the General Admission Requirements apply. Send your Grade 12 certificate and transcripts with certified English translations, and ask [email protected] how they will be assessed. Canada has no visa centre in Afghanistan. Afghan applicants usually give biometrics in Pakistan. See our student visa guide.

Budget and work rules
For the study permit you show first-year tuition, CAD 23,448 for living costs (one person, applications from 1 September 2026) and return travel. Manitoba also requires international students to join the Manitoba International Student Health Plan, so add that to your budget.
As a full-time degree student you may work off campus up to 24 hours per week during classes and without a limit in scheduled breaks, once you have a Social Insurance Number. After graduation, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit within 180 days if you meet the language requirement (CLB 7 for university graduates). See our work and stay in Canada guide.
