Why Algoma is good value

Ontario is the most expensive province for international undergraduates, so Algoma stands out. You still get an Ontario degree and access to a campus in Brampton, in the Greater Toronto Area, while paying tuition closer to Atlantic Canada levels.

  • Low Ontario tuition, published per term.
  • September and January intakes for undergraduates.
  • Lower English minimum (IELTS 6.0) for most bachelor's programs.
  • One deferral allowed without giving a reason.
  • Entrance scholarships based on your average.

September 2027 dates were not published when we checked in October 2026; for September 2026 the last day to apply was 1 July. Each master's program has its own window and campus, and some fill early (the Winter 2027 MGBE was already closed). If you do not submit your visa stamp by the published date, your offer is deferred.

Admission requirements

Bachelor's

  • Secondary school completion that meets the university-entrance standard of your home curriculum, plus program prerequisites such as Math.
  • English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 6.0), Duolingo 110, PTE 60, CAEL 60, Cambridge 176 or TOEFL 4.0 on the new scale. BSc Biology and Psychology need IELTS 6.5.
  • Upload transcripts and diploma with official English translations, and a gap explanation if you have been out of school for more than two years.

Master's

You need a four-year bachelor's with an Ontario-equivalent B (70%) or B+ (75%) in the last two years, depending on the program, and IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 83, PTE 65 or CAEL 70. The MCS requires courses in programming, data structures, theory of computing, statistics and networks. Decisions take two to six weeks and are final.

Applicants from Afghanistan and similar countries

Algoma lists requirements by curriculum but publishes no Afghanistan-specific rule, so ask admissions how your Grade 12 certificate is assessed. Canada has no visa application centre in Afghanistan; Afghan applicants usually give biometrics in Pakistan. See our Canada student visa guide.

Scholarships

International undergraduate degree students receive entrance scholarships based on their average. The top tier is the Chancellor's Award: CAD 5,000 per year (CAD 20,000 over four years, renewable) for A+ averages, with lower tiers for lower averages. Algoma says its 2027/28 scholarships are under review and may change. Graduate entrance scholarships are limited. See our scholarships guide.

Budget, work and life after graduation

IRCC asks you to prove first-year tuition, CAD 23,448 for living costs (one person) and return travel. Undergraduates also need an Ontario provincial attestation letter (PAL). Full-time degree students may work off campus up to 24 hours per week in term and full-time in scheduled breaks. Before choosing a program, check that it is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit. See our work and stay in Canada guide.

Honest pros and cons

Benefits

  • Tuition far below the Ontario average
  • January intake with a mid-November deadline
  • Lower IELTS minimum for most bachelor's programs
  • Renewable entrance scholarships for strong averages

Difficulties

  • Smaller program list than large Ontario universities
  • September 2027 dates and 2027/28 scholarships not yet published
  • Some master's intakes fill and close early
  • Sault Ste. Marie is a small northern city

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming last year's September dates still apply. For September 2026 the last day to apply was 1 July, but September 2027 dates are not published yet. Check the official page before you plan.
  • Missing the deposit date. For January 2027 you must accept and pay the deposit by 9 December 2026, only three weeks after the application deadline.
  • Forgetting the visa stamp deadline. If your study permit approval is not submitted by the first day of classes, your offer is deferred.
  • Counting on 2027/28 scholarships. Algoma says they are under review, so treat current amounts as a guide only.
  • Choosing the wrong campus. Programs run on specific campuses (Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton or Timmins), so confirm the campus before you accept an offer.
