Why Fontys is good value

Fontys charges non-EU students around €10,000 a year for most programs, well below the institutional fees of Dutch research universities. Its 22 English-taught bachelor's are the largest range among the Dutch universities of applied sciences we track, with a strong focus on engineering and ICT in the Eindhoven region.

  • Two intakes for many engineering, ICT and business bachelor's
  • Bachelor's entry at the Dutch HAVO level for most programs
  • Arts programs in Tilburg (music, dance, circus) for students who pass an audition
  • Fontys offers housing for students who apply before its housing deadlines

Proof of funds

Non-EEA students must show money for living costs before the residence permit is requested. Fontys's finance page lists €13,620 for first-year degree students in one section and €13,140 in another, so confirm the current amount with Fontys. See our cost of studying in the Netherlands guide.

Admission requirements

For a bachelor's you need a secondary diploma comparable to Dutch HAVO (VWO for a few options, such as the February start of Applied Science). Engineering and ICT usually require mathematics; science programs require physics or chemistry. Music, Dance and Circus require an audition. For a master's you need a relevant bachelor's, and some programs use a portfolio or intake interview.

English: IELTS Academic 6.0 (each part 6.0, one may be 5.5), TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale, Cambridge/Linguaskill 169, PTE 61, LanguageCert 65 or TOEIC 865/335. Tests must be taken at a test centre and be at most 2 years old. Fontys may ask for a test even if your diploma is in English.

From Afghanistan or Pakistan?

Nuffic compares the Afghan 12th Grade certificate to HAVO, the level Fontys asks for most bachelor's. You cannot get an MVV in Kabul; your IND letter will name a Dutch mission, usually in India, Iran, Pakistan or the UAE. Details are in our student visa guide.

Fontys deadlines for international students

Program pages print 1 May 2027 for September, while the general deadlines page states 1 June for non-EEA students; use the earlier date to be safe. Arts programs have their own audition deadlines (for example Dance 1 March, Circus 1 April). Housing applications close on 15 June for September and in early December for February.

Scholarships

Fontys takes part in the NL Scholarship, a partial first-year scholarship for selected non-EEA students. The Fontys scholarship page does not state the amount or deadline; nationally the NL Scholarship is a one-off €5,000. Read our scholarships guide and plan to pay the full cost yourself.

Living in Eindhoven, Tilburg or Venlo

Fontys's English-taught programs are spread over three cities, so check which campus your program uses before you look for a room. Study in NL says students in the Netherlands spend on average €1,000–€1,500 a month, and an average room costs about €550 a month depending on the city. There is a national housing shortage, so start early, use Fontys housing if you can, and never pay for a room you have not seen (an online viewing is acceptable).

With your student residence permit you may work up to 16 hours a week, or full-time in June, July and August, once your employer has a work permit (TWV) for you. Internships that are part of your program do not need a TWV. Do not count on part-time work to cover your fees; the IND wants to see your full proof of funds in advance.
