At Sorbonne University, a non-EU master's student can pay the same €255 a year as a French student, but only if they request the exemption. The national non-EU master's fee is €3,950 a year for 2026/27; Sorbonne lets students liable for that fee apply for an exemption through its Student Life support platform.
Combine that with a central Paris campus and English-taught science master's in physics, high-performance computing and quantum information, and Sorbonne is one of the best-value options in the capital, as long as you plan the exemption request carefully.
Why Sorbonne University is good value
- Exemption policy: according to our fact pack, the Governing Board adopted a policy on 7 July 2026 under which eligible non-EU students who apply pay the same fees as EU students in 2026/27.
- Science focus: its English-taught master's sit in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, in fields with strong job markets such as computing, HPC and quantum technologies.
- Central Paris: you study in the heart of the capital, close to labs, companies and internships.
- Free applications: no university application fee is stated; Mon Master and eCandidat are free.
Tuition and fees in 2026/27
| Level | National rate | Non-EU without exemption |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's | €178 | €2,902 |
| Master's | €255 | €3,950 |
| Doctorate | €398 | Not subject to differentiated fees |
| Engineering | €630 | Check with the university |
National rates come from the university's enrolment page; the non-EU amounts are the national differentiated fees from Campus France. The CVEC student contribution (€105 for 2026/27) must be paid before enrolment.
How the exemption works
- Automatic full exemption: students with a state higher-education grant, students enrolled under an agreement that exempts French students, and students on qualifying exchange programs.
- Not liable at all: doctoral students, long-term resident permit holders and students who have lived in France for at least two years.
- On request: other non-EU students apply through the Student Life support platform. The university says its exemption committee assesses each application, looking at financial resources, health, distance from family, family difficulties or isolation, and disability.
- Refugees and exiles: refugees, asylum seekers, stateless people and people with subsidiary or temporary protection may apply for a full exemption.
Do not assume the exemption
The enrolment page covers 2026/27 only and says nothing about 2027/28. National waiver rules changed with Decree 2026-385 of 19 May 2026. Budget for €3,950 until you have the exemption decision in writing, and re-check the enrolment and fees page.
English-taught programs
Sorbonne has no English-taught bachelor's degrees. Its programs in English page and faculty pages list these master's:
- Paris Physics Master (2 years)
- Master in Computational Mechanics (CompMech, 2 years)
- From Fundamental Molecular Biosciences to Biotherapies (2 years)
- EIT Digital Master School: Cloud and Network Infrastructure (CNI, 2 years)
- Master of Computer Science: Digital International Program (DIGIT, 2 years), only for non-French-speaking students
- Master of Computer Science: Quantum Information (IQ, 2 years)
- High Performance Computing (HPC), part of EUMaster4HPC (2 years)
- Waves and Devices for Advanced Wireless Communication Systems (WaveWiCom, 1-year M2)
Compare with other universities in our guide to English-taught programs in France.
Admission requirements
- Degree: a bachelor's in the relevant field. There is no fixed minimum grade; DIGIT, for example, asks for a computer science bachelor's "with honors".
- English: typically CEFR B2. The HPC master accepts B2, TOEFL 85 or IELTS 5+ taken within the last 3 years, or proof of a degree taught in English.
- Documents: diploma and transcripts, CV, motivation letter, proof of English, passport.
- Extra steps: some computer science programs need an additional Candyweb step after eCandidat.
Deadlines (last published: 2026/27 intake)
| Route | Who uses it | 2026 dates |
|---|---|---|
| Mon Master (M1) | Most M1 applicants not using Études en France | 17 Feb – 16 Mar 2026 |
| eCandidat (M2 and some international M1) | Direct applicants | 26 Mar – 11 Jun 2026 (some until 26 Jun) |
| Études en France | Residents of EEF countries | October – December (DIGIT) |
For 2027/28, Campus France says Mon Master applications run from February to 16 March 2027. Sorbonne's own 2027 eCandidat dates are not published yet.
Scholarships
- Fee exemption: the biggest saving: you pay €255 instead of €3,950 a year for a master's.
- France Excellence Eiffel: €1,200 a month for master's students; the university must submit your file to Campus France by 6 January 2027.
- EIT Digital and EUMaster4HPC: these networked programs run their own selection; check their pages for funding.
- France Excellence for Afghan students: deadline 31 May 2027, includes a tuition waiver for national degrees at public universities.

Living in Paris
Paris is expensive. For the visa you must show at least €877.50 per month (from 1 August 2026). Campus France's average CROUS residence rent in Paris is about €450 a month, and a private studio costs at least about €800 (Service-Public). You may work up to 964 hours a year alongside your studies, but do not count on a job to pay your rent in the first months.
Applying from Afghanistan
Confirm your channel
Sorbonne's faculty page treats Afghan residents as "non-EU students living outside EEF countries" who apply on Mon Master or eCandidat. The French government's 2027 call for Afghan applicants says people living in Afghanistan apply through Campus France in India, Iran or Pakistan and Études en France, and only those embassies issue their student visas. Ask both before you pay fees. Students in exile have a dedicated route and may get a full fee exemption.
