Why YTU is good value

  • One flat fee: engineering costs the same as economics, which is unusual in Turkey.
  • Istanbul location: a large state technical university with Davutpaşa and Yıldız campuses.
  • Strong engineering range in English: from civil and chemical engineering to artificial intelligence.
  • Several entry routes: TR-YÖS, SAT, ACT, IB, Abitur and many national diplomas. YTU's own YÖS exam has been abolished, so you do not need a separate university exam.

Your budget also needs housing, food, health insurance and the residence permit card (964 TL from 1 January 2026). Our cost of studying in Turkey guide covers these.

Our data counts 9 English master's and 6 English PhD programs.

Language requirements

English-taught bachelor's students start with an English prep year unless they are exempt. Accepted exemptions: YTU's own exam (60/100), YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL 60, TOEFL iBT 72, PTE Academic 55, or Cambridge CAE/CPE grade C. IELTS is not on the list we checked.

You will also need some Turkish

Even in 100% English programs, YTU requires Turkish at B1 level (TÖMER or Yunus Emre) within one year, with one extra year allowed. Start learning Turkish early.

Admission requirements (bachelor's)

  • TR-YÖS at least 450/500
  • SAT at least 1100/1600, with Math at least 550 for engineering
  • ACT at least 24, or IB at least 30/45
  • Abitur or an accepted national exam or school-leaving diploma from the annex of YTU's admission directive

Documents include your high-school diploma with apostille and a notarised or consular Turkish translation, your transcript, the exam result (TR-YÖS with ÖSYM QR code, or a notarised SAT/ACT report), passport copy, student visa, six photos, a financial guarantee declaration and the YTU undertaking form.

Applying from Afghanistan

YTU's directive lists Afghanistan among the countries that can use the diploma route: an Afghan school-leaving certificate with at least an 80% average, provided it gives access to four-year bachelor's studies at home. No entrance exam is needed on this route. Because Afghanistan is not in the Apostille Convention, get consular legalization and a Turkish translation. See our documents guide.

Master's and PhD admission

Graduate admission runs through the Graduate School of Science and Engineering and the Graduate School of Social Sciences, with separate quotas for foreign nationals. A master's place needs an overall score of at least 60/100, made up of 40% entrance exam, 10% bachelor's GPA and 50% ALES (at least 55, or a GRE equivalent). English-taught master's programs need YDS 55 or an ÖSYM-recognised equivalent; English PhDs need 60. Foreign nationals can also apply for a PhD with an extra-quota acceptance letter, without an exam.
