On this page
The University of Mons (UMONS) is a smaller public French-speaking university where non-EU students can take an engineering or neuroscience master's in English for €5,369 per year (2026/27), and nationals of ARES-listed countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria are exempt from the €4,175 part of that fee. Its English offer is small but focused: four masters.
Here are the fees, the four programs, the grade and English requirements, and the strict arrival rule you must plan for.
Why UMONS is good value
- Regulated French Community fees, with the same nationality exemptions as UCLouvain, ULB and ULiège.
- Engineering in English at Polytech Mons: electrical, energy, and computer engineering and management.
- Moderate English requirement: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 72, below the IELTS 6.5 asked by VUB and UAntwerp.
- Clear rules published in official admission regulations.
UMONS tuition fees for non-EU students
UMONS's official annual budget document gives €5,369 per year for new non-EU students in 2026/27: the €1,194 registration fee plus a €4,175 additional contribution. When we checked, the UMONS fee web page still showed 2025/26 amounts and said the 2026/27 fees were not yet available.
Nationality exemption
ARES Circular 2026-001 applies to all French Community universities from 2026/27. It exempts nationals of countries in its three annexes from the €4,175 supplement; they still pay the registration fee.
| Annex | Examples of listed countries |
|---|---|
| 1 — least developed countries | Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Ethiopia, Sudan, Yemen |
| 2 — low Human Development Index | Pakistan, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Syria |
| 3 — additional | Lebanon |
2025/26 for comparison
On its fee page for 2025/26, UMONS charged €835 to nationals of ARES annex countries and €5,010 to other non-EU nationals. Confirm the 2026/27 and 2027/28 figures with UMONS before paying.
All non-EU applicants pay a €200 administrative application fee, which must reach UMONS within 15 days of submitting. It is deducted from tuition if you are admitted and is not refunded otherwise.
English-taught programs
Almost all UMONS bachelors and masters are taught in French. The English-taught masters are:
| Program | Length | Faculty |
|---|---|---|
| Master in Electrical Engineering | 2 years | Polytech Mons |
| Master in Energy Engineering (Energy Production and Usage in Industry; Energy Usage in Cities and Communities) | 2 years | Polytech Mons |
| Master in Computer Engineering and Management (Cybersecurity and Forensics for the Internet of Everything) | 2 years | Polytech Mons |
| Master in Biomedical Sciences (Neuroscience) | 2 years | Medicine and Pharmacy |
Admission requirements
- Grades: an average of 12/20 (or 'fairly good') in your last year or years of study. Polytech Mons also requires 12/20 excluding the thesis or internship, and at least 12/20 for the thesis or internship.
- Neuroscience: at least 12/20 over the last three years with no failing grades, and a previous degree recognised as worth 300 credits.
- English (engineering): B2, such as IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72, TOEFL ITP 543, Cambridge 160 or TOEIC 750. Graduates from Australia, the UK, the US, New Zealand, South Africa or Canada are exempt. Tests may be taken up to 15 June.
- French: A2 is advisable for engineering; B2 French may be needed for extra credits taught in French.
- Documents: motivation letter in English, passport, all transcripts and diplomas, proof of your activities every year since secondary school, English certificate, an online financing plan, and sworn translations for documents not in French, Dutch, German or English.
Applications cannot be accepted while you are still completing your current year. See Belgium admission requirements for more.
Deadlines and arrival rule
Under the 2026/27 admission regulations, non-EU applicants needing a study visa had to apply online by 31 March 2026, 23:59 Belgian time. Non-EU applicants already living in Belgium had until 31 August. Admitted visa students must be in Belgium by 30 September, or their registration is refused. The 2027/28 regulations are not published yet. Only one application per year is allowed, and UMONS does not accept intermediaries.
Scholarships
We found no UMONS degree scholarship for non-EU applicants on its admission pages. The main savings are the ARES nationality exemption and external grants such as Wallonia-Brussels International's MASTER IN grant (€10,020 over 12 months; the 2026/27 deadline was 31 March 2026). See scholarships in Belgium.
Living in Mons
Study in Belgium estimates living costs in French-speaking Belgium at €1,000 to €1,300 per month. The visa means of subsistence for 2026/27 is €1,062 per month, which UMONS also cites. You may work up to 20 hours a week during term. Read cost of studying in Belgium.
Is UMONS right for you?
UMONS makes sense if you have a strong engineering or biomedical bachelor's, good grades, and want a master's in English at a regulated public fee. If your nationality is on the ARES list, you are exempt from the €4,175 supplement, so you pay the same low regulated fee as at UCLouvain, ULB or ULiège, in a smaller city.
- Good fit: engineering graduates with at least 12/20 who want electrical, energy or cybersecurity-focused engineering.
- Good fit: applicants whose English is solid but not yet at IELTS 6.5.
- Think twice: if you want a wide program choice; compare UCLouvain, ULB and ULiège, which follow the same fee rules with many more English-taught masters.
