Yes, you can study in Belgium entirely in English: FindUniPath has verified 327 English-taught programs at 47 Belgian institutions, including 250 master's programs and 70 bachelor's programs. Most English options are at master's level. For a bachelor's in English, your best choices are Flemish universities of applied sciences and a small number of university programs.

This guide shows where the programs are, what English test scores you need, and what to watch out for. Our counts come from official university program pages and do not yet include KU Leuven, whose program list we could not verify; KU Leuven itself states it offers more than 100 English-taught programs.

Private schools also teach in English, for example Antwerp Management School (8 master's), Vlerick Business School (7 master's) and Brussels School of Governance (3 bachelor's and 4 master's), but their fees are much higher. See our cost of studying in Belgium guide.

English-taught master's programs: examples

  • Ghent University: International Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Engineering, Marine Biological Resources, Rural Development, Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences, Master of Arts in African Studies, European Master of Laws in Law and Economics.
  • University of Antwerp: Laws (LL.M), Molecular Biology, Physics, Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management, and advanced master's programs in Management and Maritime and Air Transport Management.
  • UCLouvain: Economics (General and Econometrics), European Studies, EU Studies and Management (Louvain-la-Neuve).
  • University of Liège: Economics (research and professional focus) and Management Sciences tracks such as Banking and Asset Management and International Strategic Marketing.
  • VUB: Business Economics, Linguistics and Literary Studies, Research Master in Philosophy, and Law and Technology.
  • Hasselt University: Management, Biomedical Sciences, Transportation Sciences, Statistics and Data Science, Energy Engineering Technology and Interior Architecture.

English-taught bachelor's programs: where to look

Only a handful of research universities teach full bachelor's programs in English. Ghent University offers three Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences tracks (Communication Studies, Political Sciences, Sociology), and the University of Antwerp offers Social-Economic Sciences and YUFE Urban Sustainability Studies. French Community universities teach bachelor's programs almost entirely in French.

Universities of applied sciences in Flanders offer more practical English bachelor's programs:

  • Thomas More (22): Applied Computer Science tracks (Application Development, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Innovation), Electronics-ICT tracks, Automotive Technology and International Digital Experience Design.
  • Howest (8): Cybersecurity, Creative Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, Digital Arts and Entertainment, Digital Design and Development, Industrial Product Design.
  • VIVES (8): Aviation tracks (Aeronautical Engineering, Aspiring Airline Pilot, Air Traffic Control), Hotel Management, Business Management and Nursing.
  • UCLL (7): Applied Computer Science and International Business Management tracks.

Advanced bachelor's are not first degrees

Some programs in these lists are advanced bachelor's or short tracks (for example Howest's Advanced Bachelor in Bioinformatics or UCLL's Advanced Business Management). They are for students who already hold a bachelor's degree, so read the entry requirements carefully.

English language requirements

English-taught programs require at least B2. According to Study in Flanders, most Flemish programs ask for IELTS 6.0 overall or TOEFL iBT 72–94. In French Community master's programs, B2 is commonly shown by IELTS 5.5–6.5, TOEFL iBT 72–95, TOEIC 785–940, Cambridge FCE above 160 or CAE above 180. Individual institutions often set higher scores.

Can you skip the English test?

  • English-taught degree: VUB, Hasselt (for most programs, with a medium-of-instruction attestation) and UCLouvain engineering accept a previous degree fully taught in English.
  • Country exemptions: UMONS exempts graduates from Australia, the UK, the US, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada; Thomas More exempts English-medium diplomas from listed countries.
  • School or university study in English: Howest accepts one year of English-taught secondary school or 30 ECTS of English-taught higher education.

Test validity and format

Check the rules before booking. Thomas More does not accept certificates older than two years, and the University of Antwerp does not accept home or online tests and only accepts tests taken on or after 1 January 2024. TOEFL introduced a new 1–6 score scale in January 2026, and several Belgian universities now list both scales.

Flanders or the French Community: where are the English programs?

Both Communities offer English-taught master's programs, but the bachelor's picture is very different. In our database, Flemish institutions account for almost all English-taught bachelor's programs, while French Community universities focus on English master's programs in fields such as economics, management, engineering and European studies.

The choice also affects your costs and paperwork. French Community universities charged a fixed €5,369 per year to non-EU students in 2026/27 (with an exemption from the €4,175 part for least developed country nationals), while Flemish fees vary by institution. A French Community bachelor's also requires an official diploma equivalence. Our admission requirements guide explains the differences.

PhD programs in English

Doctoral research in Belgium is commonly done in English, but formal English PhD programs are listed only at a few institutions in our database: Ghent University, UCLouvain, the University of Liège (2), the University of Antwerp, ULB and the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp. In practice, PhD admission depends on finding a supervisor and funding. In the French Community, Study in Belgium states that a PhD requires a 300-ECTS master's with an average of 14/20, a thesis proposal and the supervisor's agreement. ULB accepts PhD applications from 16 February to 31 October each year.

Benefits

  • Hundreds of master's programs fully in English, across both Communities
  • Many universities accept an English-taught degree instead of a test
  • Practical English bachelor's in IT, aviation, design and business at universities of applied sciences

Difficulties

  • Few English bachelor's programs at research universities
  • Fees vary widely in Flanders, and private English programs are expensive
  • Daily life, student jobs and some extra courses may require Dutch or French

Do you need Dutch or French?

Not for the program itself. However, many Belgian universities teach most of their programs in Dutch or French. UCLouvain, ULB, ULiège and the University of Namur state that most programs are in French, and ULB requires French B2 for bachelor's programs. Always confirm that every compulsory course is in English.

Some English programs still recommend local language skills. UMONS advises French A2 for its English-taught engineering master's and says French B2 may be needed for extra credits taught in French. In daily life, some Dutch or French will help with housing, part-time jobs and paperwork.

Applying from Afghanistan, Pakistan or India? English is usually the language of instruction in your previous degree, but most Belgian universities still ask for an IELTS or TOEFL score unless your degree was fully taught in English and they accept a medium-of-instruction letter. Ask the admissions office before you pay for a test, and book early because test dates fill up before February and March deadlines.

How to find the right program

  1. Search the official finders: Study in Flanders programs and Study in Belgium programs.
  2. Open the program page and confirm the language of instruction for every year.
  3. Check the admission requirements and English score for that specific program.
  4. Compare fees, because they vary widely between institutions in Flanders.
  5. Note the deadline for non-EU applicants; see how to apply to universities in Belgium.
