The University of Graz generally charges third-country students €726.72 tuition per semester plus the Students' Union (ÖH) fee of €26.20. Citizens of countries in the appendix to the Tuition Fee Regulation, the poorest countries, pay only the ÖH fee; the university's own rules for Afghan applicants confirm that Afghan citizens fall under this exemption.

This public university in Graz, the same city as TU Graz, teaches about 20 master's programs fully in English, several jointly with TU Graz under NAWI Graz. The application rules are strict: short windows, complete files only, and C1 English. Here is everything you need, with dates labelled by academic year.

Two rules that cost people a semester

Incomplete applications are rejected and cannot be resubmitted in the same semester. And if you apply in the wrong window (EU instead of non-EU), your application is cancelled and you are blocked for two semesters. The window depends on your nationality, not the country of your degree.

Provisional certificates are accepted up to one year after graduation, but students still in their final year cannot apply yet. If you are finishing your bachelor's in 2027, plan for the following intake and use the time for your English test and legalisation. Our how to apply to universities in Austria guide has a full timeline.

Applying from Afghanistan

For Afghan degrees, the University of Graz admits to a master's only on the basis of a bachelor's of at least four years plus a master's degree, with at least 80% of the maximum marks. A bachelor's alone does not qualify. If you meet this rule, you pay only the ÖH fee.

Your documents must be legalised as required for Afghan certificates. The Austrian Embassy in Islamabad states it cannot legalise Afghan documents since 1 January 2013, so confirm with the university's international office which route it accepts. See our documents and legalisation guide.

Living costs and the residence permit

OeAD estimates average student living costs at about €1,300 per month. For the Residence Permit – Student in 2026 you must show €722.58 per month under 24 or €1,308.39 per month from 24, for 12 months. Read our Austria student visa guide for the full process.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Picking the window by degree country: the University of Graz decides the window by your nationality.
  • Submitting with documents missing: incomplete applications are rejected for that semester.
  • Applying directly for a NAWI Graz master's: if your degree is not from Uni Graz or TU Graz, you first go through the TU Graz admission procedure.
